Fifth Grade
Egremont’s predominant goal is to prepare students to succeed in an academically challenging environment. These goals are achieved through developing self-directed individuals who are critical thinkers, productive life-long learners, effective communicators, and responsible citizens. The ongoing process begins in kindergarten and is fostered throughout each grade level as the students progress.
Fifth graders acquire advanced typing skills and continue their mastery of PowerPoint presentations presenting information visually with animated pictures. Students also work with values and labels in Excel, creating charts and graphs that depict the information. Video segements are also incorporated into student visual presentations.
Students who leave Egremont after the fifth grade are accepted to many local private schools. They are well prepared to enjoy success in these schools. The majority of Egremont graduates attend private high schools, although some choose local public schools.
Teaching methodologies in social studies at the Egremont School are refined in order to be age/grade level appropriate. These methodologies include: oral presentations and instructions, Socratic method, readings from literature, question and answer sessions, art, puzzles, audio/visual materials, related music, role playing, games, maps and globes, current events, displays, time lines, the Internet, essays, debates, field trips, guest speakers, journals, research and creating a research paper with the English class, storytelling, outlines, and testing.
